Overview
Indian Oil and Gas Canada (IOGC) can provide an Agreement Search Report for active oil and gas agreements (lease/permit) on Indian lands. If you are unsure of an agreement’s status, please contact IOGC prior to sending payment.
A search request can be made for a variety of reasons, some of which include: to confirm the status of an agreement a company intends to acquire; to confirm that a security notice has been filed or discharged; to confirm that an administrative transaction is completed; or as audit documentation for company records.

All searches are provided on the condition and understanding that Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada is not responsible for any loss or damage arising from any errors or omissions in the search. Any person making use of or relying in any way on the search releases Her Majesty the Queen in Right of Canada from any liability for such loss or damage.
What information is provided
IOGC will provide a separate Agreement Search Report containing the following data for each agreement requested:
General
- Agreement number
- Previous related agreement, if applicable
- Effective date
- Expiry / review date
- Term
- Annual Rental
Grantee
- Grantee name(s)
- Grantee interest
Land Description
- Total no. tracts
- Hectares
- Land Effective Date
- Rights granted
- Formations and Exceptions
- Legal land description
- Canada Lands Surveys Records (CLSR) plan number (surface leases only)
Pending Administrative Activities
- Type
- Administrative Activity Effective Date
- Comments (description)
Securities
- Description
- Debtor Creditor
- Effective
- Registry #
What is not provided
Information pertaining to Direction to Comply notices or Royalty Amendments is not provided for reasons of confidentiality.
Cautionary Note
The legal description contained in the search report has been converted from the original agreement to a computerized format. Although it may appear more detailed, it may not be as accurate as the agreement description. This is often the case where lakes or rivers form natural reserve boundaries. Should you require this information, for instance, for calculating acreage or pooling interests, please contact IOGC for assistance in determining the most accurate information.
Request an Agreement Search Report
Agreement searches are conducted for legal land descriptions or by agreement only. Please contact a Jr. Lease Administrator to determine the agreement numbers if only the legal land description is known.
Requests must be made in writing and must include:
- the agreement number(s) and/or legal land description

all agreements requested must be active
- if you are uncertain as to an agreement’s status, contact IOGC
Fees for searches:
- a $25.00 administration fee is charged for each agreement for which a search is completed
- this fee must be received by IOGC prior to the searches being released to the requestor
- fees are payable to the Receiver General for Canada
- if you are uncertain as to an agreement’s status, please ensure you contact IOGC prior to making payment

Alternatively, agreement information can also be obtained from the Indian Lands Registry by creating a free user account and conducting a search. Please note that the ILR does not record title to land, but rather it registers transactions in land (as title remains with the Crown).
